QUESTION AND ANSWER

What are USF & Telecom Taxes?

Issue

Objective

Environment

  • OpenVoice
  • OpenVoice Integrated

Procedure

Answer

  • OpenVoice and OpenVoice Integrated are charged with additional fees such as USF and various state taxes. These taxes are assessed based on the customer’s ship-to address.
  • USF is a federal tax applied to telecommunications services. This tax is not eligible for exemption. Further information can be found here.
  • OpenVoice is a communications service that allows users to dial-in from multiple locations; due to the “one-to-many” nature of these communications, they cannot be classified as either entirely interstate or entirely intrastate and may potentially have characteristics of both. Because many state and local jurisdictions will tax these types of communication as if they were entirely intrastate, we now include a state telecommunications tax on your invoice. Telecom state taxes will list separately from sales tax. If you’d like more information on your state tax regulations specific to telecommunications, please visit your (state).gov website.
