Why do I get a message, "Device Pairing Failed. An unexpected error has occurred" when pairing my mobile device?

This error message can occur if your mobile device's settings do not allow for notifications to be sent to the authenticator app when setting up Multifactor Authentication for your LastPass account. This issue has occurred specifically for authenticator apps that support push notifications (e.g., LastPass Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, etc.).

To resolve this error, you must enable notifications for your authenticator app on your mobile device, then resume setting up Multifactor Authentication.

Note: Instructions may vary depending on your device and mobile operating system.

Enable notifications on iOS

  1. On your iOS device, go to SettingsNotifications.
  2. Scroll down and tap to select your authenticator.
  3. Toggle the switch to On to enable notifications for this app.
  4. Resume the steps for setting up Multifactor Authentication on your mobile device.

Enable notifications on Android

  1. On your Android device, go to SettingsNotifications.
  2. Scroll down to locate your authenticator.
  3. Toggle the switch to On to enable notifications for this app.
  4. Resume the steps for setting up Multifactor Authentication on your mobile device.
