LastPass Families as a Benefit – FAQs for Users

As a LastPass user, please review the most frequently asked questions below about Families as a Benefit.

What is LastPass Families as a Benefit?

If you have a LastPass Business account through your employer, your account also includes a complimentary LastPass Families account. This is a personal LastPass account granted to you that also includes five (5) additional LastPass licenses, which you can grant to individuals closest to you – family, friends, anyone you care about – so they can also use LastPass to keep their digital lives safe.

Who can claim this offer?

All new and existing LastPass Business accounts include the Families as a Benefit offer, which is a complimentary LastPass Families account with five (5) additional individual licenses. Learn how to claim your Families as a Benefit offer.

Where can I check if I have Families as a Benefit?

Once you log in to your LastPass Business account and open your Vault, you will see Account Benefits in the left navigation, where you can activate your Families as a Benefit account.

Can I claim Families as a Benefit without linking a personal account?

Yes – Families as a Benefit can be claimed without having to link a personal account.

Can I link a personal account without claiming Families as a Benefit?

It depends on whether your organization allows you to claim Families as a Benefit.

If Families as a Benefit is promoted within your organization and available for you to claim, then LastPass requires you to claim Families as a Benefit before you can link a personal account. This will require you (as a Premium account holder) to claim Families as a Benefit before linking your personal account.

Note: If you had previously linked a personal account before Families as a Benefit became available to you, your personal account may have become unlinked. If so, you can re-link your personal account after claiming Families as a Benefit.

Alternatively, if Families as a Benefit is not supported by your organization, then you will still be able to link a personal account (as long as policies permit you to do so).

What if I don't want to activate the offer?

While we certainly recommend it, you are not required to activate the Families as a Benefit offer. If you ever change your mind and want to activate it, the Account Benefits option in the left navigation will remain in your Vault for you to claim at any time for the duration of your employment at your company.

Additionally, LastPass admins can enable the policy for "Restrict LastPass Families as a Benefit" if they do not wish to allow their employees to claim this offer.

Can I deactivate it if I no longer want the offer?

Yes – if you change your mind and decide you don't want it, you can deactivate Families as a Benefit.

Can I give the offer to someone else?

No – this offer is only available to employees with a LastPass Business account and can only be activated within the Vault of the LastPass Business user's company account.

Will I ever be charged for Families as a Benefit?

No – this is a complimentary LastPass Families account that is included in each LastPass Business user account through their employer at no added cost to employers, their end users, or their end users' Family Members.

Is Families as a Benefit available for LastPass Teams?

No – this offer is only available to companies with a LastPass Business account. Learn more about feature differences on LastPass Plans & Pricing.

I already have LastPass Premium or Families, can I still claim the offer?

Yes – existing customers who have purchased a LastPass Premium or Families account will be migrated to the Families as a Benefit account once the offer has been activated in the employee's LastPass Business user account.

Will I be reimbursed if I already paid for LastPass Premium or Families?

No – existing customers who have already paid for LastPass Premium or Families will not be reimbursed for a personal account that they have already purchased.

What happens if I am terminated or leave the company?

Shortly after you (an employee) is de-provisioned and separated from an organization, you will be prompted to purchase your own LastPass Families account by entering your own personal payment information. If you choose not to purchase a LastPass Families account, you and your designated "Family Member" accounts will be converted to LastPass Free accounts without the risk of any data loss.

Important: You will never lose any of your stored Vault items if you convert to a LastPass Free account. However, LastPass Free accounts only allow you to access LastPass from one device type (i.e., either all computers or all mobile devices). Learn more about LastPass Free.

What if I have already activated the Premium as a Perk offer?

If your employer has already provided you with a Premium as a Perk offer (and you have activated it), you can still activate the LastPass Families as a Benefit offer within the Account Benefits tab of your Vault. This will upgrade your LastPass Premium account to a LastPass Families account, which includes five (5) additional licenses to share with those closest to you.

I already have a LastPass Families account, will I lose any of my shared items or folders when I claim my Families as a Benefit offer?

No, all of your shared items and folders will remain shared (as-is) after you claim Families as a Benefit.

What is account linking, and why should I use it?

You can link your personal LastPass Families account to your company's LastPass Business account so you can keep your Vault entries all in one place while both accounts remain separate. If desired, you can always unlink your personal account at any time if you no longer want to access your personal Vault items while logged in to your LastPass Business account.

Can my employer or my users on my LastPass Families account view the contents of my personal Vault?

No – regardless of whether you choose to link your personal Families as a Benefit account with your LastPass Business account, your employer will never be able to view or access your personal Vault, nor the Vaults of your Family Members in your LastPass Families account.

Similarly, in your personal LastPass Families account, each person can only access their own personal Vault (regardless of their role in LastPass Families – Family Owner, Manager, or Member). This means that nobody can view or access another person's Vault within the account. However, you and your LastPass Families users can choose to proactively use the Sharing Center to share individual items (passwords, payment cards, secure notes, etc.), or create a shared folder and fill it with items to share with another person within your LastPass Families account.

I have activated Families as a Benefit and added my users – where should they go if they need support from LastPass?

The Families as a Benefit offer provides "Personal" level support for its LastPass Families users. This includes access to the 24/7 LastPass Support Center (which offers various self-help articles, videos, and additional resources) as well as access to the LastPass Community (for crowd-sourced support, which is monitored by LastPass Specialists). If additional assistance is needed, these LastPass Families users can submit a case via our 24/7 Support Center to contact LastPass Support.
