How do I update a stored password?

To keep up with best security practices, it is recommended that you update your stored passwords regularly to minimize security compromises. First, change your password directly on your desired website within the website's settings, then LastPass will automatically prompt you to update the password stored in your LastPass Vault. You can also update your stored password manually by using the Field icon, using the web browser extension, or manually updating within your Vault.

Update automatically

  1. In your web browser toolbar, click the inactive LastPass icon .
  2. Enter your email address and your LastPass Master Password, then click Log In. An active LastPass icon is now displayed in your web browser toolbar to indicate a successful login.
  3. Go to your desired Site and log in with your current username and password.
  4. Within your site's account login settings, change your password by entering your current password, then creating a new password and confirming it. If desired, you can have LastPass create a strong password for you by clicking the Generate Password icon within the field.
  5. Once your changes are saved, click Update on the prompt from LastPass to automatically update the stored password in your LastPass Vault.

Update manually using the Field icon

  1. In your web browser toolbar, click the inactive LastPass icon .
  2. Enter your email address and your LastPass Master Password, then click Log In. An active LastPass icon is now displayed in your web browser toolbar to indicate a successful login.
  3. Navigate to your desired site and log in with your username and current password.
  4. Change your password within the site's account login settings.
  5. Log out of your site.
  6. In the login field, click the LastPass Field icon .
  7. Hover over the entry you want to update, then click Edit.
  8. Make your desired changes. To reveal text as you type, click the Show Text icon . You can also click the History icon to view the username and/or password history for this stored site.
  9. When finished, click Save.

Update manually using the web browser extension

  1. In your web browser toolbar, click the inactive LastPass icon .
  2. Enter your email address and your LastPass Master Password, then click Log In. An active LastPass icon is now displayed in your web browser toolbar to indicate a successful login.
  3. Navigate to your desired site and log in with your username and current password.
  4. Change your password within the site's account login settings.
  5. Click the active LastPass icon in your web browser toolbar.
  6. Hover over your desired entry from the list of matching sites at the top of the web browser extension menu and click Edit, or look up your stored site using the Search field and click Edit.
  7. Make your desired changes. To reveal text as you type, click the Show Text icon . You can also click the History icon to view the username and/or password history for this stored site.
  8. When finished, click Save.

Update manually within your Vault

  1. Navigate to your desired site and log in with your username and current password.
  2. Change your password within the site's account login settings.
  3. Log in to LastPass and access your Vault by doing either of the following:
    • Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and log in with your username and Master Password.
    • In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon LastPass then click Open My Vault.
  4. Click Passwords in the left navigation.
  5. Locate your site entry, then hover over it and click the Edit icon .
  6. Make your desired changes. To reveal text as you type, click the Show Text icon . You can also click the History icon to view the username and/or password history for this stored site.
  7. When finished, click Save.
